Mirror glass removal

Postby Haygood » Sat Oct 20, 2018 8:25 pm

I have some cracks to repair in the mirror housing. How can I get the glass out of it, or at least the black inner plastic out of the painted outer mirror housing? I'm hoping there is something more to it than, "pull on the glass and pray you don't break it." :)

If anyone has a badly broken mirror housing sitting around, perhaps we could look at what's inside it?

With the mirror shifted/aimed as far as it can, it looks like there are two or three screws holding the black plastic insert into the painted mirror housing. There is no way to get those out without first removing the glass. So, I'm thinking of just pulling on it. Maybe I can find the right side suction cup so I can pull more evenly.

Thanks!!! Yes, that helped. I was able to pry my glass out without breaking it. I started at the top outer corner and was able to pry the black plastic off from around the edges with my fingers. Very helpful photos. Thanks.

Hello,

I use hot water or Heat gun ( best Way) to remove the glass mirror, and the same to install, don't push on the center glass to replace!!!!!fragile

Best regards

So to remove the glass you simply heat up the glass then pull, as it is simply glued on?

There is no glue. If you look around the edges of the glass, you will see the black plastic piece just barely reaches around the edge of the glass all around its perimeter. You need to push this plastic lip back off the glass around the top half of the glass so you can pull ut the rest of the way free. If you are scared enough, it won't break. :)

I think the heat he mentioned is to soften that plastic lip slightly, which makes a lot of sense. I have yet to try putting one back together!
