Removing speedometer perspex cover

Postby crusoe » Tue Oct 25, 2011 1:52 pm

Hi Folks,

Getting ready to transfer my GTS from French to UK registration.

The speedo is in km/hr, so I want to put some marks on the dial at 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70 mph. I can't put marks on the perspex as it is quite far from and not parallel to the dial surface which will cause "parrallax" problems i.e, moving your head will cause the marks to move around relative to the dial.

The question is :-

"How do I remove the clear perspex cover to get access to the dials. Is there an easy way of doing it?"

Thanks

Speedo cover removal

You have to remove the plastic around the speedo assembly to get access to the fasteners. You could get mph speedos some years ago IIRC, but if you are handy with a graphics program you might be able to make up a new dial.

PS I'm sure my km/h bike had dual mph & kph markings.
I've just started riding the GTS again, and it'll be changing

@ Mike,

I'm sure that a french bike, like a dutch one does not have double markings.
Your double marked speedo is pretty rare...

@Chris

Very rare, :lol: ,as it's a MPH speedo with KPH marks too, but I'll check the Swiss bike.

PS @ other Chris, I can scan this if you'd like and put it in the downloads section.

Perhaps you can do following...

Take a large resolution picture of the speedo, preferably with the needle removed.
Print it on a sticker, and cut out to fit.
Stick it on the KM speedo, and hey presto.....
Cheers,

Chris

@Chris

What you don't know was after the picture was taken I removed the needle and the dial, so I was just planning to scan the loose dial on a scanner, and as you say, you could use it as artwork for a sticker or even silkscreen a new one, and if you wanted to be really over the top, I'll get a laser cut pattern dial made, and you can stick it on that!

Be a lot nicer than putting marks on a KPH speedo.
